Stopping unwanted e-mail

Dealing with unwanted e-mail

From time to time you may receive unwanted (or spam) e-mail. This is normally sent by companies to advertise services or items for sale.

It can be difficult to deal with unsolicited e-mail. Whilst it is not possible to stop this type of e-mail altogether, it is possible to reduce it.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Visit the following site to open the Internet Security Team form: http://www.tesco.net/netreport
2. Select "Junk email/Spam" from the "Type of abuse" dropdown list:

3. Select "Email" from the "Form of abuse" dropdown list:

4. Start Outlook Express
5. Click the right mouse button on the unwanted e-mail and left-click Properties

6. Click the Details tab

7. Click the right mouse button anywhere on the header text and left-click Select All

8. Click the right mouse button anywhere on the selected header text and left-click Copy

9. Return to the Internet Security Team window. Right click in the Log Evidence window and click Paste:

10. You will see the header information in the Log Evidence window:

11. Enter the offending e-mail address and IP address. This information can be found in the header within the Log Evidence window:

12. Enter the time and date that you received the email. Also enter your time zone, name and email address. You may wish to select "I wish to remain anonymous"

13. You can reset the form by clicking Reset Form if you have made a mistake. Click Submit to send the form to our abuse team.

Our abuse team will trace the e-mail using the header information and deal with the incident appropriately.

Please note that this is not a guarantee of cessation of unsolicited e-mail, and that the Internet Security Team can only deal with unwanted e-mail that originates from the Tesco domain.

Other options

Replying to spam, using an 'unsubscribe' link, or in some cases even just opening the message, will confirm to the sender that your e-mail address does exist and result in more mail rather than less. Do not reply to spam mail under any circumstances.

You may wish to explore the 'message rules' available in your e-mail client. You can for example, create a message rule to automatically delete all e-mail that is not sent to your individual e-mail addresses.

You may be able also create a rule to delete e-mail from our server to avoid the need to download it at all. Similarly you can create a rule to delete e-mail that are sent from specific domains, or those containing certain words or phrases.

However, blocking individual messages rarely works, because the sending addresses are forever changing.

To set up your message rules in Outlook Express, click on 'Tools' > 'Message Rules' > 'Mail', to start the relevant wizard.

If you are finding SPAM a particular problem, you may wish to consider a mail filtering product. Tesco internet access provide a mail filtering product that can be applied for by visiting http://www.tesco.net. Click My Account, log in using your email address and password and click the "Your Internet Security" link.

There are other spam filtering programs available for download. However, please note that Tesco internet access do not recommend or endorse software, and cannot support any problems which arise from the use of these products:

Mailwasher: www.mailwasher.net
K9: http://www.keir.net/k9.html
Cloudmark: http://www.cloudmark.com/
MAC: http://allmacintosh.xs4all.nl/email_checkers_default.html

Anti-virus specialists such as Symantec (also known as "Norton") and Mcaffee also provide commercial SPAM filtering products.

You may also like to take a look at SpamCop. This is a free web-based service, which automatically reports SPAM to the issuing ISP and any domains through which the e-mail may have been forwarded, there is also some general information about how to log and report SPAM to best effect.

To use SpamCop, please go to the following address: http://spamcop.net/anonsignup.shtml to register your e-mail address. Then simply cut and paste the full text of any SPAM e-mail, including the headers, into their web-page. SpamCop will analyse the source(s) and submit its report (all without disclosing your e-mail address).
